Melanotan 2 is a synthetic peptide studied for skin pigmentation and melanocortin signaling. Researchers have examined how activating melanocortin receptors can influence melanin production as well as other biological responses controlled by this receptor family.

In scientific terms, Melanotan 2 is a cyclic analog of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH) with activity at multiple melanocortin receptors. Research has examined melanogenesis, pigmentation, appetite-related signaling, and sexual-function pathways. Increased pigmentation should not be assumed to provide adequate protection from ultraviolet exposure, and reported mole changes do not by themselves establish causation.
